Samaná
Santa Bárbara de Samaná, usually just called Samaná, is the provincial capital and overlooks the bay of the same name, known for humpback whales from January to March. It is a town that lives all year round, with condos, bay-view villas and land.
What is Samaná like?
Santa Bárbara de Samaná, which everyone calls Samaná, is the capital of the province. Unlike Las Terrenas, which faces the Atlantic Ocean, Samaná looks onto the bay of the same name, on the south coast of the peninsula. It is a town with provincial government offices, shops, a port and local life all year round.
Every winter the bay welcomes humpback whales that come to breed. According to the Ministry of Tourism, the season runs from mid-January to the end of March, and whale-watching trips, regulated by the Ministry of the Environment, leave from the port of Samaná.
What kind of property is there?
- Condos in town or in communities overlooking the bay.
- Villas on the hills around the town.
- Houses in the urban neighborhoods.
- Land and a few commercial units linked to tourism and the port.
The agency works mainly in Las Terrenas; any Samaná properties we have on our books appear under properties for sale. If you do not see what you are looking for, ask us.
How do you get there from Las Terrenas?
By road, across the peninsula. Route planners give about an hour's drive; the real time depends on traffic and road conditions. Samaná is also connected to Santo Domingo by road.
Who is Samaná for?
- People who want to live in a real Dominican town, with government services nearby.
- Lovers of the calm waters of the bay and of boat trips.
- Investors in lodging or tourist services tied to the whale season.
What should you check before buying in Samaná?
- Title and legal status, as with any purchase: certificate of title, deslinde (survey) and no liens.
- The coastal strip along the bay: the law places a 60-meter strip from the high-water line in the public domain, where building is in principle not allowed.
- Seasonality: if you are buying to rent to tourists, demand may be concentrated in certain months; ask the seller for real occupancy figures, not promises.
- Access and utilities (water, electricity, internet) at the exact address.
